Failinger's Hotel Gunter
Today:
In September 1986, The Hotel Gunter was purchased by its current owners, The Failinger family. Because of its state of disrepair, the Hotel required intensive renovations. The first masterpiece of renovation is the massive stairway that greets you when you walk through the doors. Although the stairway was covered with several coats of paint, it has been returned to its natural oak beauty. this lovely stairway has been the setting for numerous weddings and countless photographs. A visitor to the basement area will find the original jail, game cock fighting arena and coal furnace. The coal car tracks that were used to bring in fuel to heat the hotel are also visible. And a replica of an underground coal mine has been constructed as a tribute to the coal mining history of the area. Along the basement hallway you can see displays of artifacts found in the hotel during the renovation. Original restaurant menus dated 1907, baby clothes and assorted bottles and newspapers are among the exhibits. The 5th floor observatory is being renovated, and will be opened to the public at a later date. The view is just as beautiful as before. On a clear day you can see the mountain ranges of Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Recently completed are 17 hotel rooms and18 apartments. Rooms are furnished in Victorian style to compliment the history of the hotel. Each room has been decorated individually and are all uniquely different- to make our guests feel extraordinary. The hotel also offers the modern conveniences of air conditioning, remote cable television, an elevator, and sprinkler systems. The Failinger family invites you to come in and tour their hotel. They're sure you will enjoy its beauty and fall in love with its charm just as they did. And for your next event, whether its a wedding reception, dance, or meeting, consider the Failingers Hotel Gunter; we offer a formal dining room and banquet room. We'll make it special for you. The most popular time for the hotel is during the first weekend in December when the Christmas open house is held every year. The Hotel is decorated beautifully, and draws the most attention at this time. Please be sure to make your Christmas reservations before this time if you wish to stay at the hotel to insure room availability. The Hotel is also hearing impaired and handicap accessible.
